WAR WITHOUT END
THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT IS HAPPY WITH A VOLUNTEER ARMY, SINCE THAT KEEPS THE REST OF THE COUNTRY DISCONNECTED FROM THE WARS. THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A VAGUE REASON FOR BEGINNING THESE WARS BUT AT SOME TIME MORALITY NEEDS TO KICK IN. IF NOT MORALITY AT LEAST NOW THE RIGHT WING NUT JOBS ARE TALKING ABOUT COST, WHICH OF COURSE WAS LEFT UNSAID BEFORE WHEN KING GEORGE WAS PRESIDENT. EXACTLY WHAT DID A MONTH OF "SCHOCK AND AWE" OVER BAGHDAD COST? THE LEFT'S SILENCE IS COWARDLY AND THE RIGHT'S INTELLECTUALLY DISHONEST. WE ARE PLAYING THE PUNCH DRUNK SAILOR IN A BAR BEING LAUGHED AT BY THE CROWD, I AM AFRAID.

I support the all-volunteer army, Terry, because conscription is effectively slavery. Absent a general call up (think WWII) for pressing national security needs, the draft is immoral and antithetical to freedom.
Like Obama said a few years ago, I am not opposed to war in general. I am opposed to dumb wars. I support what we are doing in Libya. To the extent that we can foster an "Arab Spring" through air power, I'm all for it. So long as we are able, we should support the forces of freedom. Dictators beware.
If we had a draft we would have never gone into Iraq. A draft would help kids understand what price freedom really costs. A draft would mean committing the people to get behind the war, not just the politicians. A draft means everyone serves including the President's kids. A draft is our only means of having a just war.
Terry -
I understand each of your points. In fact, I agree with all of them but the last sentence. Representative Rangel has introduced legislation to reimpose the draft for those very reasons.
All that said, I completely disagree with a draft. We should not literally enslave young people for the purposes of social engineering or political posturing. I love the fact that every service member signed up. They are there on their own volition. It provides for a much more professional force. We can certainly have a just war with only free and brave volunteers.
