Why is Sarah Palin popular!

Much has been made recently about Ms. Palin and her popularity.  While Rich and his inherent sexism make much of her appearance, I think she represents the thoughts of many folks who see bullshit and are calling it on our government.  To the point, we are going broke, let's stop digging.  We see that, she says that, yet from the following:  From Krugman

These days it’s hard to pick up a newspaper or turn on a news program without encountering stern warnings about the federal budget deficit. The deficit threatens economic recovery, we’re told; it puts American economic stability at risk; it will undermine our influence in the world. These claims generally aren’t stated as opinions, as views held by some analysts but disputed by others. Instead, they’re reported as if they were facts, plain and simple.  They are not?

Yet they aren’t facts. Many economists take a much calmer view of budget deficits than anything you’ll see on TV. Nor do investors seem unduly concerned: U.S. government bonds continue to find ready buyers, even at historically low interest rates. The long-run budget outlook is problematic, but short-term deficits aren’t — and even the long-term outlook is much less frightening than the public is being led to believe.  The smugness of that last sentence is amazing and is why America hates liberals and watches Fox News.  "We, the smart people will decide how close to the cliff to drive.  We know what is best.  Yes our long-term outlook is in trouble but don't worry, you are being led incorrectly."

So why the sudden ubiquity of deficit scare stories? It isn’t being driven by any actual news. Really?  Like legislation to raise the debt limit?  It has been obvious for at least a year that the U.S. government would face an extended period of large deficits, and projections of those deficits haven’t changed much since last summer. Yet the drumbeat of dire fiscal warnings has grown vastly louder.

Let’s talk for a moment about budget reality. Contrary to what you often hear, the large deficit the federal government is running right now isn’t the result of runaway spending growth. Instead, well more than half of the deficit was caused by the ongoing economic crisis, which has led to a plunge in tax receipts, required federal bailouts of financial institutions, and been met — appropriately — with temporary measures to stimulate growth and support employment. And the other half?

The point is that running big deficits in the face of the worst economic slump since the 1930s is actually the right thing to do. If anything, deficits should be bigger than they are because the government should be doing more than it is to create jobs.  So if we are broke, the cure is to max out the credit cards?  That does not even pass the laugh test.  Government does not create jobs, except in government.

True, there is a longer-term budget problem. Even a full economic recovery wouldn’t balance the budget, and it probably wouldn’t even reduce the deficit to a permanently sustainable level. So once the economic crisis is past, the U.S. government will have to increase its revenue and control its costs. And in the long run there’s no way to make the budget math work unless something is done about health care costs.  Then why not start now?

The fact that Sarah is popular in your party speaks very poorly of your membership. It is consistent with the poll posted here this week showing that 23% of Republicans support secession - just as Sarah's husband has as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party. Today's GOP is a largely ignorant, emotional and intolerant bunch.

They complain about spending, but have they even looked at a budget? They say taxes are too high and then show up at town hall meetings and scream "Keep the governments hands off my Medicare!"

The Good Doc himself has frequently opined about taxes and spending yet when challenged, comes up woefully short. The Republican Party is clearly full of highly partisan empty suits that offer no understanding of our problems or the solutions thereto.

When science conflicts with their religion or political dogma, science loses and we waste time debating issues that highly educated scientists - experts in the field - have already answered. Thanks to Republicans, evolution is being debated 85 years after the Scopes Monkey Trial. When I was a kid, that trial was used as an example of how ignorant we were in the days yonder.

The responsible and credible Republican Party of the 1950s - 1970's is ancient history. Today, it's leaders would be chastised as RINOs by the base. Many otherwise thoughtful conservatives have been pulled to the right by the likes of Fox News unaware of where their views will come to rest, just as the frog remains in boiling water as the temperature is gradually increased. Republicans on this board have advocated trials without counsel for defendants facing the death penalty and prayers that harm may come to our duly elected president. Can't everyone see how dangerous and off track this kind of thinking is?

That is why Sarah Palin is popular in today's Republican Party. Does anyone think she would have gotten a second look in the era of Eisenhower and Nixon?

Bax,

Sometimes you are just too funny.

You grab onto a poll showing the oddities of Republicans and make it your favorite toy for a while. You know that we (you and I) could commission a poll and reveal the complete inadequacy of the electorate in general or any particular segment thereof.

Do you actually think Democrats are smarter than Republicans? I'd really like to know.

Or is it just that you are smarter than Republicans?

I'm going outside and play now.

I think the poll was very accurate and I do not think we could commission a poll that would show similar results among Democrats. I think the Republican BASE is just that crazy. I think that the likes of FNC has given them permission to espouse views that were only held by John Birch Society members in the past.

I think that the average Democrat is clearly smarter than the average member of the Republican base. Obama, of course, won the vote of the college-educated voters. In Massachusetts, the 2010 move to the right v 2008 was primarily among whites without the benefit of college.

Now, I will stray from PC, understanding the attacks that will follow. Jews vote Democratic on a 2/1 - 3/1 basis and are probably the most intelligent and educated among us. I don't think that is a coincidence. It figures.

Oh my God!

"Today's GOP is a largely ignorant, emotional and intolerant bunch."

You guys are the most intolerant group there is. You guys love to preach tolerance unless you disagree. I am laughing so hard I can't stop.

Emotional - you guys have cornered the market with your feel good politics that never work (the Great Society, Welfare and the list goes on and on). Talk about emotional - get serious, you bleeding heart liberals are totally chickified. This is hillarious.

Partisan - you guys have used class warfare forever.

You can talk about science vs religion but that is a persons point of view which you scoff at. Where's the tolerance.

You opine about the recent SCOTUS decision regarding campaign finance, crying how unfair it is and the SCOTUS is "reaching" for this decision. I'm still trying to find the right to an abortion - "right to privacy", sure! Talk about reaching.

Yes the walking zombies watching FOX! I watch, read and listen to many different venues to educate myself. Huffington, Dailey Kos, Politico, NYT, WSJ, Newsmax, The Nation, Newsweek, Time, Rush, Hannity, Ed Schultz, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, Air America (when it was still available). You just don't get why FOX is so popular - they are an alternative to the rest of the liberal media. Look at the ratings! Go ahead tell your self the rest of the media is not liberal and tune into NPR. By the way I see the Democrat base doing the same thing to moderates in their party. Then you cry about those wanting to harm a duly elected President - evidently you have never listened to Randi Rhodes, Michael Moore or Mike Malone (to name only a few) - all part of the base?

As far as Sarah goes I'm not a supporter, however Barak Obama - how about that thick resume!

You keep believing your analysis of MA.

Your naivete has no bounds!

Still laughing! Have a great weekend!

Jim: The one and only thing that has made Sarah Palin popular has nothing to do with politics.

I watched Sarah tonight and was impressed. We seem to view leaders through the lens of "President". She seems to reject that box.

She makes sense, speaks from the heart about a pro business, pro self reliance America.

No one else was on all three cable news networks tonight.

And yes she is attractive, but Eric, I can still listen.
