Every president since the amendment has been handicapped and it gravely damaged their second term. They become the only lame duck in town. Every House and Senate member knows to tread carefully with prospective presidents and party leaders, but they can treat the lame duck president like shit - they will be out of office on a date certain.
I wouldn't mind changing the amendment to no more than two terms IN A ROW, but I want to be able to elect whomever the people want. I don't want our politicians knowing that they will never have to deal with a president again. I want their political viability to remain intact.
Eisenhower said his 6th year in office was the worst year of his life. He lost a GOP Congress. Nixon had a poor second term, no? Reagan had Iran-Contra, Clinton had Monica, and GWB had a disaster of a second term. Possibly worse than Nixon. In each case, these guys were fighting a blood sport with one hand tied behind their back.
After sitting out a term, shouldn't America be able to choose Clinton or GWB if they want to? Freedom is freedom. Why tie our hands?
The Good Doc knows that I have advocated this since the days of Reagan. I NEVER liked the 22nd Amendment.
Finally, I am not cocky at all. I know that eventually the worm turns. Hopefully it will be a long while, such as 1932-1994...

Because:
because Presidents tend to wear thin. Because no President represents a clear majority of the people.
Because we have a representative government, not a continous one.
Because, where were these guys when Ronnie was around?
Or should it be, repeal the 22 for Socialists?
besides, don't get cocky.
