A Memo to the Left

Be careful what you wish for. Obama is a smart and genuinely caring person. I think he truly believes he can help people in this country, but historically more government is a scary concept. Make no mistake, your taxes will go up. And to everyone who wishes for the government to take care of them as Obama promises, good luck with that. More government invites more scrutiny into our personal lives and documentation why we need help in the first place. Fill out these forms and wait in line. Your wish has come true.

I thought the most telling moment during all the commentary last night came when the republican strategist on CNN, Alex Something or Other (Castannelos?) blamed the republican defeat on the fact "that they broke their brand" (referring to fiscal conservatism) and after that, had nothing to present/offer to the American people.

I agree and I intend to use the next several years, in one form or another, fighting to bring my party home to its ideals, values and principles. I blame no one but us republicans (yes, I am still a registered republican), from Bush through Limbaugh and his intolerant kind to the Republican members of Congress. When we regroup, let's hope it is around a meaningful philosophy and some sacred values of limited government (i.e. FREEDOM).

Jim -- It has to be a combination of things. First of all, Linda and I are elected preceinct committeemen in Mesa. Although we are moving, we will seek to be appointed in our new precinct and fight from within the party structure for the ideals we espouse.

Second, I am going to spend a lot of time searching out and supporting (financially and otherwise) candidates and potential candidates who I believe will truly fight for what we believe.

Third, I am going to continue to talk to every Republican I know about the disaster of these past few years when we lost our way. I will write, email and talk about the greatness of our philosophy. Educate people.

Finally, and this depends upon a variety of factors, I may get back into the breach myself. I am far from the perfect messenger, but if others are not articulating the principles and ideals of freedom that I hold dear, and that the party should, in my opinion, be pushing, I may do so myself as a candidate. I think it would be fun and instructive to force republican voters to choose between the me-tooism, republican-in-name-only philosohpy and history of the past several years and a true, limited government republican view.

In short, Jim, although I have strong libertarian values, I am going to promote them from within the Republican Party.

Sounds great Tom. We need to come back to being the party of fiscal sanity. If we do not and we know the Democrats will never become this then the future of the country is bleak. We cannot continue to spend like drunken sailors. The Social Security system will hemorrhage soon. As the population of healthy retirees continues to increase and draw for longer and longer periods of time due to the fact that life expectancy continues to increase the money coming in will cease to meet the demand. It is simple math and many European countries have already figured it out and started to cut back on entitlement programs. This is certainly one of the reasons why Europe has been taking a rightward turn politically.
