So who won the debate?

Irrelevant question at best because no one will vote for the Vice President.
For my conservative friends, remember when Bob Dole ran against Clinton and you would think, I could do a better job debating than Dole, I get the same feeling about McCain.

Sarah established herself as a leader very much in the Reagan mold, in fact very much. One consequence of this losing campaign will be establishing Gov. Palin as the future standard barer of the Republican party.

The only Republicans Presidential candidates who have lost during my lifetime have been moderates. The party again and again needs to listen to the electorate not the chatting class.

Rich, as we head into socialism, say goodbye to your country.

Yes, I am pessimistic, I must be a Libertarian.

So Gwen? The question referencing an unpopular V.P., objective? Book deal? What?

Danm, I am in a Hags state, the wine was fine.

What I took away from the experience was this: I can see why people vote for Sarah (has she ever lost an election?) and I can see why Joe got less than 1000 votes total in his last presidential campaign.

Joe Biden is a fine guy. He is more on the Dem side than I am, put he is principled and has been free of corruption, not counting a mild case of plagerism. I admire him in the same sense as I do Feinstein. But, after watching him tonight, could you attach the word Leader to him, or would you describe him as an agent of change. No. And the people of Iowa showed they agree.

As to Sarah, notwithstanding the fact that she is not ready to win the PolySci version of Jeopardy, you can see the natural characteristics of a leader. It is just there.

One of the things that kills policy wonks about American presidential politics is that, IMHO, the number one determinate of the election is likeability. Like it or not (pun intended) that is the deal. On that basis, Sarah scored a knock out. Not because of what she said or he said, but simply because of who she is.

Dems hated it when nothing stuck to Reagan and Elephants hated it when nothing stuck to Bill. Its 'cause the majority of the country liked them.

Ganem is right, and that isn't easy to write, McCain is 90% sure to lose, and Veeps don't matter anyway (Spiro, Quail, Gore), but Sarah will energize her side for another 4 weeks.

Then she goes home and waits for the right time.

They both did. They held their own. Sarah stopped the bleeding. Biden kept the kid gloves on.

Hags makes great points about our Teflon presidents. People often forget that Clinton's highest approval ratings came during L'affair Lewinski.

If likeability ultimately wins the day, America loses. I think the world would be a much better place had the Gore victory in 2000 been recognized.

Would any serious person support Palin for the presidency? Aren't there any serious and qualified Republicans out there?

I thought the debate was what it should have been - top ticket focused. Palin admittedly did better than I expected her to...but my original opinion of her has not changed. The folksy, soccer mom, wink at the camera thing does not work for me and actually makes me angry. Many of my highly educated, professional, independant female friends respond to her in the same way. Her performance in the debate, IMO, does little to change anything - JFG - if you lock me in a cabin for 3 days and drill into my brain the procedure for doing a "Cardiac Catherization" there is no question I could stand in front of the nation and give a stirring rendition of "How to Perform a Cardiac Catherization"...it doesn't mean that in real life, and left to my own devices, I have the knowledge and skill level to actually pull it off without killing someone.

You don't actually drill in the brain to do a cath, but anyway.

She talked like an experienced Reagan. If she choses, she will have a voice for a long time. I am not sure she will make that choice.
